TAIL HAIR PLEASE

The majority of our items require tail hair for workability and durability.

Mane hair is not thick or strong enough for braiding.

HELP, I ONLY HAVE MANE HAIR!

Don't despair. You still have some options. Have a look at our resin items, the "Fair Lady" bracelet and our horse shoe pendant, all of which are suitable for mane hair.

HAIR QUANTITY REQUIREMENTS

The table below should prove a useful resource in terms of giving you an idea of how much hair you need for a specific design.

Err on the side of caution.  If you are in a position to send a little more hair that you think you need, please do so.  We will send whatever is left back with your finished product.

We cannot work with any hairs that are significantly shorter than the recommended length (these will be discarded), so these should not be taken into account when trying to establish the thickness of the bunch you need.

STILL UNSURE IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH HAIR?

Send me a photo of what you have so that I can confirm for you. Lay your hair against a ruler so that I can assess the length properly,If your horse has a very short tail, please contact me so that I can make some design recommendations.

HAIR FAQS

DO I NEED TO WASH THE HAIR BEFORE SENDING IT TO YOU?

No.

I always wash the hair before braiding, but the hair does need to be relatively clean and odour-free before sending. If you insist on washing your horse’s tail before gathering its hair, please do not apply conditioner or any other oil or silicone based products as these only make the hair slippery and difficult to manage.

HOW DO I PACKAGE THE HAIR?

PLEASE ONLY SEND HAIR THAT IS FREE FROM KNOTS AND TANGLES
PLEASE DO NOT KNOT OR PLAIT THE HAIR BEFORE SENDING

  • Once you have enough hair (REFER TO OUR HANDY TABLE BELOW), take an elastic band and secure all the hair together at one end.

  • Put the hair bundle in a zip-lock bag or separate envelope and label with both your name and your horse's name.

  • If you are sending hair from more than one horse, please mark each bunch separately.

CUTTING HAIR FROM A TAIL

  • You want to be making a bunch of hair that comprises mostly of the longest tail hairs you can find.

  • I recommend taking hair from the underside of the tail so that you don't see any regrowth.

  • It's the long hairs that you want. Try and separate as many of the long hairs away from the shorter hairs before you cut so that you don't end up cutting too many unnecessary hairs.

  • Cut the hair as close to the tailbone as possible. Cutting 2-4 smaller sections from will ensure that you don't notice where the hair has been taken from.
